Spring/Summer Fun in SLC: Fabric Center Sewing and Quilting Classes!
If you're looking for fun things to do in the Salt Lake Valley this summer, for a way to keep your teen entertained over the break or a break for yourself away from the kids for an hour or two, we have an exciting class schedule starting right now that continues through the rest of spring and into early summer! Here are just a few highlights:
Tuesday, May 20th:
This is Two for Tuesday as we have two very exciting classes. We have a 2 hour Teen Beginning Sewing class starting at 4 pm that runs once a week until June 17th. This class is open to ages 12 to 18 and is taught by fun loving and talented Maquel with a fee of $50 plus the cost of supplies. She will teach your child the very basics of sewing including the importance of straight seams and how to achieve a polished product. During the 5 week class, students will make a pillowcase and matching pajama pants (fabrics for projects pictured below). With this class, we hope your teenager will cultivate a newly acquired talent and will embrace the confidence that results from creating a fun, usable product from raw materials.
Following Beginning Teen Sewing, we have a Crazy Scrap Quilt taught by Cheryl. She will teach you a foundational piecing technique that makes this project a quick and fun activity. Even better, the only supplies needed are the ones you bring from home! This is meant as a stash busting project, so if you have lots of scraps building up at home, bring them in and create a silly little quilt. Class begins at 6:30 and runs till 8:30 and costs only $20. *If you do not have enough scraps for this class, your teacher Cheryl will cut a kit for you for an additional cost. Let the clerks know you'd like this done for you when you sign up so we can pass the information on to your teacher.
Saturday, May 24th:
Cheryl is back, but this time she is teaching you a 4 patch method that makes creating kaleidoscope quilts a breeze! Yep, we have a Kaleidoscope class from 10 am to 1 pm that teaches you how to pick out the right type of fabric that makes it easier to create the kaleidoscope look as well as how to cut and piece your squares to get that unique and mind bending special effect. Even better, this class only costs $15 plus the cost of supplies!
June 5th:
We have Beginning Tatting starting up again. Taught by Maquel who learned from her grandmother, learn the dying art of shuttle lace tatting. This class runs once a week for 4 weeks, every Thursday from 6:30 to 8:30 for the cost of $40 plus the cost of supplies. Because you only learn one knot, which is used to make all designs, this talent is easier to learn than you think!

This is a exhilarating new class that is being taught by, once again, Cheryl! Not only is Cheryl a great teacher and a talented quilter, but she is also a trained graphic designer with an educated eye when it comes to color. The Quilter's Color Palette Class is from 10 am to 3 pm and includes a slide show to help you first learn the basics of the color wheel and color theory but also to advance you on how scale and pattern in a print affect color, as well as how to mix light and dark to create dramatic contrast, visual effects and optical illusions in your quilts. All you need to bring is a pencil and paper to take lots of good notes and an appetite for learning (as well as lunch; kits and lunch are provided!). For only $40, this is a unique and stimulating class! Enroll ASAP in order not to miss out.

Learn to make a detailed paper pieced star block without having to make a new template every time! In our Paper-pieced star class, which runs from 9:30 am to 3 pm, you will learn to fold you paper template rather than sew through it to cut down on your supplies and time while making a beautiful and detailed star quilt. More details coming soon!
June 24th:
As part of a new series, we have an Easy Table Runner class that runs from 6:30 to 8:30. This series is geared toward teaching you a new technique each class while making cute and seasonal table runners to display in your home. This class only costs $10 plus the cost of supplies!

This Bow Tuck Bag makes the perfect gift for a mother, daughter, best friend, sister... even yourself! Learn how to make this beautiful and professional-looking bag from 9:30 am to 1:30 pm. Class costs $20 plus the cost of supplies. Even better, rather than making them as gifts, bring your girlfriends and family members and make it a Girl's Day Out; finish class by going out to lunch together to show off all your new, fabulous bags!
