Salt Lake, Utah Winter/Spring Sewing and Quilting Classes

We have begun our Winter/Spring 2015 sewing and quilting class season and we couldn't be more excited for the new additions to our roster. Not only have we brought back our most popular and fundamental classes, but we've also added a few completely new offerings! Read on to get more details about our up coming classes --

Youth Sewing for Home-schooled Children:

We have traditionally offered our youth sewing groups in the evenings once school is out. However, this year we are offering a youth sewing class in the afternoon designed specifically for those students who are taught from home!

In this class, students will learn sewing from the ground up by first learning the different tools needed to sew and how to hand sew. They will then quickly move on to learning to sew with a sewing machine and will begin to make their first projects including a pillowcase and a pair of pajama pants. The class is designed to make students feel successful and build confidence each week with their patient and caring teacher, Peggy.

Classes are held on Thursdays from 1-3 every week except on the third Thursday of every month. Class costs $10 per sessions and does not include supplies.

Cuddle Star Pillow:

Learn how to easily make this cuddly and soft star pillow using only 17 squares of cuddle/minky fabric, two buttons and some stuffing! While it may look difficult, this is an easy project and will be a favorite gift to your children or grandchildren.

This class will be held Saturday, February 29th from 10 am to 2 pm and costs only $20, not including supplies.

Tuffet Class:

Little Miss Muffet had one and now you can too! Create your own foot tuffet in this brand new and exciting class taught by Joyce and Pat from Bouncing Bobbins Quiltworks! In this class, you will first learn to quilt your tuffet top using a jelly roll. Then you will learn how to put together and cover your tuffet!

This class is taught on two Saturdays in March, the 14th from 12:30 to 3:30 and the 28th from 12:30 to 4:30. Homework is required in between classes. This class is $105 and includes your pattern and your tuffet kit. The class fee does not include your fabric or your wooden feet. There is a 10 person maximum for this class, so sign up ASAP!

My Favorite Bag:

Learn to make this adorable bow bag with plenty of room and pockets for all your needs -- as well as plenty of style! Once you've made one, you will end up making more for your friends and family; this isn't called "My Favorite Bag" for nothing!
Class will be held on 2 Thursdays in March, the 19th and the 26th, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. Class costs $25, not including supplies.

Block of the Month:

We are trying something new this year and are offering two Block of the Month classes: a traditional Block of the Month class taught in our classroom and a Block of the Month class entirely taught online!

Our in-store Block of the Month features Peggy's design featuring the Moda Love quilt pattern as the center medallion surrounded by 12 unique quilt blocks. The quilt will also feature a ribbon outer border! This class starts in February and you can choose to attend the second Wednesday of every month from 7 to 8 pm or the second Saturday of every month from 10 to 11 am. Class costs $26 for the year and does not include the cost of supplies.

Our online Block of the Month class features the quilt Playful Pinwheels, designed by Sandra Stradley! It features 12 different styles of pinwheel blocks, done twice in different color combinations to add fun and flair! You will be able to sign up for the class soon on our online webstore - you will receive a downloadable file with information about how to access our private class website which will have each pattern published once a month as well as little surprises to the site such as tutorials, recipes and more!

This is just a small sampling of some of the exciting sewing and quilting classes we have coming up. For a complete list of our Winter/Spring classes or for more details about the ones listed here, visit our website, give us a call at (801) 561-8726 or pay us a visit in store. We are located at 9135 S Redwood Rd West Jordan, UT 84088.

This is a sample from the last offering of this class. Can you tell it's done by machine?
Instead of the picture above, you will actually be learning how to make the pattern below: Bertie's Winter by Bonnie Sullivan. There is an alternative project for this class if you decide this is not your style; the choice is yours.

Salt Lake Sewing and Quilting Classes

We are in the middle of a very exciting class season. We've started our Block of the Month Class and have several more of the QuiltSmart Club classes ahead. Within the next two months we have a Tatting class, an Adult Beginning Sewing class, a Beginning Quilting Class, and a Machine Applique class taught by the very talented and nationally recognized teacher, Carmen Geddes! Take a look below for more:

Tatting I Class:

While Tatting teacher, Maquel, may look young she is indeed very talented! She learned the antique lace art of tatting from her grandmother starting from a young age. It is refreshing to see an art that is quickly disappearing being revived by a talented young woman. Maquel says her favorite part of tatting is that you only have to learn one knot which leads to infinite creative possibilities. She proves to be a very patient and kind teacher who has gained a steady group of ladies coming back to learn more tatting tips and technique class after class.

This class is being offered Fridays starting January 24th and will meet once every other week from 11:30 am to 1:30. The class costs $40 plus the cost of supplies. There are opportunities to continue learning Tatting after this class has ended, including beading and jewelry making using tatting (as seen above), in Tatting II and Advanced Tatting classes

Beginning Adult Sewing I

If you've always wanted to learn to sew, there's never a wrong time to start learning. Join Peggy in a patient learning environment as you learn basic machine care, straight line sewing, ruffles, buttons, button holes and zippers while sewing 3 beautiful and fun pillows. This class meets once every week for four weeks and costs $40 plus the cost of supplies. Class is held on Thursdays from 6:30 pm to 8:30 starting February 6th.

Machine Applique with Carmen Geddes

This is a truly exciting class at Fabric Center; we've never had just a distinguished and nationally recognized teacher holding a class at Fabric Center! Carmen Geddes was awarded Teacher of the Year at HMQS 2013. She specializes in teaching classes at quilting shows as well as quilting retreats. To get a better idea of Carmen and her work, check out her interview with MQResource when she was named Quilter in the Spotlight.

Learn Carmen's tips and techniques for machine applique that looks as pretty and polished as needle turn hand applique by joining this class on Saturday, February 8th from 1 pm to 5 pm for only $25!

Don't delay, these classes are coming up soon. Give us a call at (801)561-8726 or come in today to sign up and sew the seeds of your creativity!

Featured New Teacher and Shop Hop Hint

We have been working with a new class organizer, Susan Hayward, who has lined up some wonderful new teachers for us. We are looking forward to all the new classes and ideas these wonderful ladies will be bringing to our store and customers. Make sure to keep checking back as we update you on our new QuiltSmart Club and Pincushion Club! We are featuring Carmen Geddes as our Premiere Teacher for November!
Carmen Geddes brings her love of quilting, embroidery, and people together for a fun day of learning. Students enjoy her friendly, low-key approach and her great techniques! She was named Teacher of the Year at HMQS 2013. She has taught at many quilt shows around the country and specializes in quilt retreats. She resides in Eagle Mountain, Utah with her husband Patrick. They have five children and eight wonderful grandkids!

Carmen's first class with Fabric Center will be a Machine Applique class! Enjoy beautiful, instant success in applique that will look hand done! If you have been overwhelmed by an applique project, or have always wanted to try but were not quite sure about the handwork, then this class is for you! In this class you will create an 18" block. You will be so hooked on this technique you will want to make enough for an entire quilt! The class will take place November 2nd from 10 am to 2 pm and costs $25. Needless to say this is a wonderful opportunity!

Finally, don't forget that next week is the fall Beehive Shop Hop! As detailed before, the theme this year is celebration with each participating store specializing in a different party theme. We have decided to keep our theme secret until the first day of Shop Hop, October 23rd. However, we are so excited about our unique and cleaver party theme that we can't help but divulge a few hints:

  • It is based off one of our most favorite social media tools designed to spread creativity and inspiration.
  • We just started our own profile for you to follow us on this social media outlet here
  • This kind of party is a fairly new invention where you and your friends create things to be enjoyed at the party or to "make and take" home while in the comfort of your host's/hostess's home.

Did those hints help? If you've guessed it or not, we would love to see you come celebrate inspiration and creativity with us next week from the 23rd to the 26th. We will be carrying our 30th Anniversary sale through into Shop Hop so everything in store remains on sale! We look forward to seeing you.
